AMC10/12 Target Audience Planning! In-Depth Benchmarking Analysis of the AMC12 Competition and the Chinese Mathematics System!

As core events in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) system, AMC10 and AMC12 are not only important references for the world's top universities to assess students' mathematical abilities but also the essential pathway to the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination). Students at different grades have vastly different goals and strategies when preparing for these competitions, and finding the right positioning is key to achieving twice the result with half the effort.

I. Precise Positioning: AMC10/12 Target Audience Planning

Lower Grades (Grades 6–8): Long-Term Planning Phase

In recent years, a large number of students in grades 6–8 have chosen to enter the competition early. Students at this stage have ample time and are highly adaptable. The core goal should not be to "get a score immediately," but to use AMC10 to systematically fill the structural gap between school mathematics and competition mathematics, cultivate competition thinking, and build momentum for a breakthrough in grades 9–10.

Grade 9: Ability Breakthrough Phase

This is the "golden sprint window" for AMC10. The core goal for 9th-grade students is to achieve AIME qualification (global top 2.5%) or a top 5% honor. Achieving AIME qualification in AMC10 will provide a significant academic advantage when applying to global Top 30 universities in the future.

Grade 10: Final Decisive Phase

This is the last year of eligibility for AMC10. For students who already have the ability, they should go all out to sprint for the global top 1% Distinguished Honor Roll (DHR), adding significant weight to their applications for U.S. Top 20 universities. In addition, students in grade 10 and below who score ≥90 in AMC10 can additionally receive the "Global Honor Award."

II. 2026 Season AMC12 Registration and Exam Schedule Reference

Based on patterns from previous seasons, the key dates for the 2026 AMC12 season are as follows (subject to the official final announcement):

Registration opens: Usually in early September each year.

Version A registration deadline: Approximately October 27–28.

Version B registration deadline: Approximately November 3–4.

AMC12 Version A exam: Early November (usually Thursday) 17:00–18:15.

AMC12 Version B exam: Mid-November (usually Friday) 17:00–18:15.

Version Selection Strategy:

AMC12 Versions A and B are similar in difficulty. Candidates may choose to take either one, or register for both. The official committee will take the highest score as the final result for AIME qualification, providing candidates with double the margin for error.

III. In-Depth Benchmarking of AMC12 with the Chinese Mathematics System

To more intuitively understand the positioning of AMC12, we can compare it with the Chinese mathematics system across multiple dimensions:

Dimension AMC12 Mathematics Competition Chinese High School Mathematics (Gaokao / High School League)
Knowledge Coverage Covers all high school knowledge (algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics), additionally includes logarithms, trigonometric functions, complex numbers, etc. Does not include calculus. Covers the core content of high school mathematics, but AMC12 places greater emphasis on the comprehensive application and cross-module integration of knowledge points.
Difficulty Gradient Questions 1–10 are basic, questions 11–20 require logical reasoning, questions 21–25 are high-difficulty (close to AIME level). Overall difficulty is comparable to the High School League Preliminary Round, but in terms of depth of proof in geometry and number theory, the High School League Final Round (Second Round) has higher requirements.
Exam Format 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes. Total score 150: +6 for correct answers, +1.5 for blank answers, 0 for wrong answers. The Gaokao emphasizes fundamentals and speed; the High School League includes fill-in-the-blank and problem-solving questions, with a greater emphasis on rigorous derivation processes.
Target Audience Students in grade 12 and below who plan to apply to overseas universities or international schools. First- and second-year high school students aiming for top domestic universities (such as Tsinghua and Peking University) and the Strong Base Plan.
Goal Orientation Extremely high international recognition; top 1%/5% awards are strong bonus points for U.S. undergraduate applications. An important basis for domestic further education; a core threshold for obtaining Strong Base Plan admission and recommendation eligibility.
