AIME Mock Practice After AMC 12: Plan for Separate Sessions

A mock is useful when it tests decisions you will actually need to make, then produces evidence for your next practice block. It is less useful when it becomes a repeated score check followed by passive solution reading.

After AMC 12, combine topic work with occasional realistic practice. Check current rules before copying an old full-paper routine.

Check the current administration rather than assuming the historical format

MAA's announced 2027 domestic arrangement separates AIME into two 90-minute sessions: eight questions, then seven. Returning to the first session during the second is prohibited. International candidates should verify their regional partner's requirements before treating those logistics as universal.

For study purposes, the important implication is to practise completing decisions within each block. Do not build every mock around a later opportunity to return to an earlier unfinished question.

Choose legitimate material and an honest baseline

Use officially released questions or clearly identified original practice. Do not search for live-paper predictions, leaked content or reconstructed secure examination sets.

Record whether you have seen each problem or solution before. A familiar-paper result can help assess recall and execution, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a fresh independent attempt.

Set a flexible within-session routine

One suggested practice budget leaves a few minutes for an initial scan and a final check, with the remaining time available for attempts. Do not divide it into a rigid equal allowance for every question: entry points and progress differ.

When pausing a problem, leave a useful note: defined variables, a verified equation or the specific obstacle. If switching questions, switch with a reason rather than because the last minute felt uncomfortable.

Check the answer you are actually entering

Before a practice session ends, compare each numerical result with the quantity requested. Did you compute a probability when asked for a sum of its numerator and denominator? Did you count unordered objects when order matters?

Detailed derivations are useful for your review. Follow official instructions for competition answer entry rather than imagining that extra written explanation will repair an incorrect entered number.

Make review longer than the score announcement

For each unfinished task, classify the barrier: no entry point, an unproductive route, a missing fact, an incomplete case split or execution. Then choose one repair and test it later on a different problem.

A mock result is a sample of performance, not a promise about an official score. For help setting an appropriate practice load, scan the QR code and send AMC12 AIME MOCK with your school year, region, prior exposure to the paper and one example of a decision you found difficult.
