AIME Mock Practice After AMC 12: Plan for Separate Sessions

A mock is useful when it tests decisions you will actually need to make, then produces evidence for your next practice block. It is less useful when it becomes a repeated score check followed by passive solution reading.

After AMC 12, combine topic work with occasional realistic practice. Check current rules before copying an old full-paper routine.

Check the current administration rather than assuming the historical format

MAA's announced 2027 domestic arrangement separates AIME into two 90-minute sessions: eight questions, then seven. Returning to the first session during the second is prohibited. International candidates should verify their regional partner's requirements before treating those logistics as universal.

For study purposes, the important implication is to practise completing decisions within each block. Do not build every mock around a later opportunity to return to an earlier unfinished question.

Choose legitimate material and an honest baseline

Use officially released questions or clearly identified original practice. Do not search for live-paper predictions, leaked content or reconstructed secure examination sets.

Record whether you have seen each problem or solution before. A familiar-paper result can help assess recall and execution, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a fresh independent attempt.

Set a flexible within-session routine

One suggested practice budget leaves a few minutes for an initial scan and a final check, with the remaining time available for attempts. Do not divide it into a rigid equal allowance for every question: entry points and progress differ.

When pausing a problem, leave a useful note: defined variables, a verified equation or the specific obstacle. If switching questions, switch with a reason rather than because the last minute felt uncomfortable.

Check the answer you are actually entering

Before a practice session ends, compare each numerical result with the quantity requested. Did you compute a probability when asked for a sum of its numerator and denominator? Did you count unordered objects when order matters?

Detailed derivations are useful for your review. Follow official instructions for competition answer entry rather than imagining that extra written explanation will repair an incorrect entered number.

Make review longer than the score announcement

For each unfinished task, classify the barrier: no entry point, an unproductive route, a missing fact, an incomplete case split or execution. Then choose one repair and test it later on a different problem.

A mock result is a sample of performance, not a promise about an official score. For help setting an appropriate practice load, scan the QR code and send AMC12 AIME MOCK with your school year, region, prior exposure to the paper and one example of a decision you found difficult.

After AMC 12: Use a Four-Part Audit to Choose Your AIME Preparation

A strong AMC 12 performance can be a useful starting point for AIME, but a total score does not tell you which practice block to choose next. Two students with similar results may have very different barriers.

Published on October 19, 2026, this is a forward-looking guide for after the November AMC examinations. It does not imply that this season's papers have already been taken.

Confirm the route without making a score prediction

For MAA's published 2027 U.S./Canada route, an AMC 12 score of 85 or higher is one qualification condition; the remaining eligibility requirements still apply. International candidates should verify arrangements with their authorised regional partner rather than assume every domestic procedure applies worldwide.

Use official results and invitations for administrative decisions. Your study plan can develop independently of a predicted cutoff or an unofficial reconstruction of your score.

Audit 1: knowledge that is available independently

Choose appropriate released problems and identify which tools you can actually use without a hint. Recognising the name of a theorem is different from checking its conditions and selecting the right quantities.

Make a narrow prerequisite list: perhaps polynomial factorisation is secure but parameter bounds are not, or coordinate distance is secure but a geometry construction is unfamiliar. Avoid replacing this detail with a label such as weak at algebra.

Audit 2: the choice of strategy

Compare problems where you found a productive representation with those where you kept calculating without progress. Was a symmetric expression available? Could an integer equation be factorised? Did a diagram need an extra variable?

Record the clue that would justify a method, not just the method name. This helps prevent applying a familiar technique to a problem whose structure does not support it.

Audit 3: completeness and interpretation

Inspect whether you excluded valid cases, included impossible ones or answered a different question. Ordered versus unordered objects, positive versus nonnegative integers and a local diagram assumption can all change the result.

A solution that reaches one valid candidate is not necessarily a solution that finds every candidate. Write a sentence explaining completeness where it matters.

Audit 4: execution and checking

Separate algebra slips from conceptual errors. For an execution issue, identify a check that would have caught it: back-substitution, a second count, a unit-free ratio or a boundary case.

Then choose a short preparation block around the most repeated barrier. Include independent attempts and delayed redos, not only solution reading. For a focused discussion, send AMC12 AIME AUDIT with your school year, region and two attempts showing different kinds of difficulty. A diagnostic is a guide to learning, not a guaranteed AIME score forecast.
